Our meeting was called to order at 12 Noon by President Patrick. He led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance & the 4-way test and a moment of silence and reflection followed.

No Visiting Rotarians or Guests today.

February is– “World Understanding Month”.

Oops! There were 3 pin or name tag buck fines today.

Announcements/Sad-Happy-Brag Bucks:

Mary J – Put up a fiver to celebrate another year, her son’s visit from New Delhi, an old friend’s visit and that her daughter’s arm is healing nicely.

Gloria – Had a chance to speak to Michael from his “hotel” in Ghana with some difficulty. He’ll be visiting several Rotary Clubs in the area, starting today.

Patrick – Has a new non leaking fish tank.

Questions for the day from Sgt-at-Arms Mollie:

What is the largest ocean on earth?  Maggie was the fastest, with the answer – The Pacific Ocean.

So, how did the Pacific get its name? Magellan named it. When he was crossing, it was very calm so he named it “Peaceful or Calm = “Pacific”.

Club, District & R.I. News and Business:

Emily provided signup sheets for our 21 February working visit (we’ll need 10 members) to The Rock at Noonday and for our assistance at the Silver Horizons thrift store. There’ll be a bowling party ; “Strikes for Seniors” on 24 February. Shall we get a team together?

Gail reminded us that Casa Esperanza is back in business and we’ll be scheduling a working dinner visit to them during the month of March.

Yesterday, the guest speaker at our Interact Club RYLA meeting was Hollie Black, a High School Senior who attended RYLA last year. She was also a Rotary Foreign Exchange student. Her presentation seems to have instigated a plethora of interested Interact members.

RYLA scholarship applications deadline: 1 May, 2019. Gail is our club’s RYLA contact person. HS juniors are eligible to apply. The 2017-18 board has committed our Club to support at least 4 campers (maybe more, this year!). The Boys’ camp 14 July to 20 July. The girls’ camp 20 July to 26 July. We hope that several of our Interact Club members will apply for this scholarship. Now we know that Dayna’s kids attended RYLA camp!

Egyptian RFE Rotarians will be visiting us from April 29th to May 2nd. They need host homes. It’s a large group and more hosts than usual are needed. If you’re interested, please volunteer. Donna believes that most members of the group will be of the Christian faith (Does that really matter?). Hosts provide a private bedroom, hopefully a private bath, and breakfast each morning. When hosts have been identified, there’ll be a meeting at which the hosts will schedule activities and determine if they’ll cover additional meals and some sightseeing. Hosts drive their guests to/from activities, or arrange for another club member to assist with driving. Let Donna know if you’re willing to host. You can reach her at pedaceabq@aol.comor 505-349-8850 to sign up or if you have any questions about hosting.

The Rotary District 5520 8th grade four-way essay contest entry deadline is 19 March, 2019. This year’s subject is: What is the 4-way test & how does each question help me to stop & make the better decisions? The top District prize is $400. If a member is interested in heading up a Club entrant contest, we will form a committee which will evaluate their essays. More info is to be found on the District 5520 website. Our Club’s winner does receive a cash award from us. Applications & instructions are on the District website.

Club members have volunteered to be responsible to provide program speakers for our meetings. Here’s a REVISED list for each remaining month of the 2018-2019 Rotary Year:

February-Emily          March-Gail       April–Allan              May-Fofo        June-Maggie

Birthdays This Month:          Dayna, Mary J & Gail – Yup, they got the song and cake too!

The PolioPlus “spare change” jar made its weekly trip around the room.

Today’s Program:     Travels to Japan- and beyond.

Emily Introduced Club member Dave Fontaine, who has recently visited Japan via a cruise on the Holland America Line’s Westerdam. Along with many beautiful photographs shown and narrated by Dave, he covered the sights and cities on his 14 day trip from Tokyo to Shanghai. The trip also touched upon Korea and China.

Their cruise included excellent guides and on-board lectures and stopped at many cities. There were excursions every day, when they weren’t at sea. The tour also stopped off at the Forbidden City, The Great Wall and Tiananmen Square.

There being no additional Rotary business, our meeting concluded at 1:00 PM.
