Today’s meeting was cancelled by President Patrick . The N Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center was closed today due to inclement weather and we thought that it would be best not to meet in the parking lot.

February is– “World Understanding Month”.

Club, District & R.I. News and Business:

Grants Management Training: If our Club is considering applying for a grant during the next Rotary Year, two Club members must attend one 2 hour training. Training via “Zoom” takes place on: March 12, 14, 18, 20, 26, 28. April 1, 3. AND at the District Conference.

District grants applications must happen between 15 April and 15 June. Apply to A.C. Sanders (El Paso). Global Grants apply at any time to Tom Simon.

RYLA scholarship applications deadline(from our Club to District): 1 May, 2019. Gail is our club’s RYLA contact person. HS juniors are eligible to apply. The 2017-18 board has committed our Club to support at least 4 campers (maybe more, this year!). The Boys’ camp 14 July to 20 July. The girls’ camp 20 July to 26 July. We hope that several of our Interact Club members will apply for this scholarship.

Request for RFE host club from Donna Pedace and Regina Guest, RFE Co-Chairs:

We’ve had three international RFEs cancel in the past few months. While we’re waiting to firm up details on additional RFEs with other countries, we’re offering a few domestic RFEs. Domestic RFEs are becoming much more popular around the U.S., as other districts have had the same cancellation problem recently. It is also much less expensive to travel to & from domestic districts, so we hope you’ll be open to this new Rotary offering.

The first RFE will be with Fredericksburg, Texas. This will be an opportunity to see one of the most beautiful areas of Texas and will probably include a visit to San Antonio, as well as other local attractions. This info was put out earlier but the Texas group needed to change the dates.

They’ll be visiting our district from July 8-16, 2019 and our group will travel to their area in early winter. The domestic RFEs are easier, as there will be no language problem (well, almost none!) and it’s a fun way to meet other Rotarians from around the U.S.

We need one more volunteer hosting club for our Texas guests. If your club has been thinking about hosting, this could be the perfect opportunity to ease into the program. Just think of them as long lost cousins and what you would like to show them in your area. If your club is interested to host, we will need someone in your club to be the local coordinator to work with the hosting families, to plan the visit.

Hosting families are expected to provide: A private bedroom and, hopefully, a private bath; breakfast each day; and to be willing to drive your guests to/from activities or to find another driver from your club willing to do that. The local hosts and their club are asked to be as creative as possible in thinking about how to minimize other expenses, such as meals and sightseeing costs. Pot luck meals are a great way for your club to meet and interact with the incoming guests and there are often many no-cost activities that can be planned.

If you are interested in hosting this RFE group and showing them some good D5520 hospitality, let Donna know by return email at pedaceabq@aol.com. You may reach her at 505-349-8850 with questions.

The Egyptian Rotary Friendship Exchange will visit from April 29th to May 2nd. They need host homes. It’s a large group and more hosts than usual are needed. If you’re interested, please volunteer. Donna believes that most members of the group will be of the Christian faith (ed: Does that really matter?). Hosts provide a private bedroom, hopefully a private bath, and breakfast each morning. When hosts have been identified, there’ll be a meeting at which the hosts will schedule activities and determine if they’ll cover additional meals and some sightseeing. Hosts drive their guests to/from activities, or arrange for another club member to assist with driving. Let Donna know if you’re willing to host. You can reach her at pedaceabq@aol.comor 505-349-8850 to sign up or if you have any questions about hosting.

The Rotary District 5520 8th grade four-way essay contest entry deadline is 19 March, 2019. This year’s subject is: What is the 4-way test & how does each question help me to stop & make the better decisions? The top District prize is $400. If a member is interested in heading up a Club entrant contest, we will form a committee which will evaluate their essays. More info is to be found on the District 5520 website. Our Club’s winner does receive a cash award from us. Applications & instructions are on the District website.

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, a student nurse found an elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted that he didn't need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let her wheel him to the elevator. On the way down she asked him if his wife was meeting him.
'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'

Club members have volunteered to be responsible to provide program speakers for our meetings.
