June is still “Rotary Fellowships Month”.

June birthdays are: Maggie and Jan

Following our weekly roll call,

Sgt-at-Arms Cheryl presented our weekly trivia question:

What does this chart represent??? NOT Albuquerque, but showing Bernalillo county’s current Covid-19 cases.

Currently, we have 1828 cases with 82 deaths.

Club, District & R.I. News and Business:

We are sad to have learned that Jan has submitted her resignation from Rotary due to business pressure.

Through July (at least), all of our Rotary Club meetings will be taking place via Zoom.

It looks like the North Domingo Baca Center (our meeting venue) may open up for us in August!

Mark your calendars for 20-26 June to gather online with the family of Rotary for our first online R.I. convention.

Check out our Club web site and Calendar. www.rotarysandia.org  Click on events (no password needed).

Club members provide program speakers for each month of the Rotary Year: Pam’s doing it in June.

District 5520 PETS and Annual Conference will be held on April 8th thru 11th, 2021 at the Las Cruces Convention center.

Today’s Program: Coronavirus 2019 Update

President Vivien introduced Dr. Antonio Grillo-Lopez, RC of LaJolla Golden Triangle, CA and renowned medical researcher. Today, he helped us to become acquainted with various facts about the virus.

SARS Cov-2 Virus causes Covid-19 (Coronavirus 2019 disease) in humans.

How shall we ultimately defeat SARS Cov-2? Here are determining factors:

We want to survive the disease… To combat the disease, we are using convalescent plasma, which has antibodies, then Hyperimmune globulin and derived Anti-SARS Cov-2 antibodies (some are even manufactured!)

We don’t know the recovery rate as yet…

Then, there’ll be a SARS Covid-2 vaccine which will be available soon. Some will be available in October and more during January, 2021.

Remember that vaccines are NOT 100% effective.

There are currently around 160 vaccines being developed around the world by various companies and are in various stages of completion.

Then, there’s “Herd Immunity”. That’s when at least 60% to 70% of the population are immune.

Of those persons who are infected, the overall survival rate is 95%. The young, under 20 years of age, have a survival rate of 99%. The elderly, over 65 years of age, have a survival rate of 85%.

Re. Immunity: If you’ve had the virus and recovered, you do have some immunity (antibodies). For how long? We don’t know… Maybe for 40 days (figuring half-lives) or, maybe for 6 months.

Next, there’s the question of how and when we should “reopen”.

How? Very Carefully!

When? Only when a downward trend in cases and mortality really happens.

Now, in the USA, 20% to 40% of positive persons are asymptomatic… I.E.: 1 in 10 tested will have the virus! As of this time, only 9% have been tested.

There are now 2.4 million cases in the U.S. and one person in twelve tests positive.

In New Mexico, numbers of both cases and deaths are going down.

We do have some problems… Not everyone will wear masks (only 60% wear them). Also, not everyone will want to be vaccinated!

You can’t really find the N-95 masks… So, homemade masks are better than nothing. They must be made with at least three layers of cloth.

Don’t believe all of what you hear via newspapers and TV, etc. Reporters are NOT scientists and do NOT really understand those scientific reports!

Will there be mutations of this virus as there are with other viruses?? Maybe… We’ve got to be ready for that.

Dr. Grillo-Lopez suggests that we all get our Pneumonia vaccinations also.

REMEMBER - - - It ain’t over ‘til it’s over!!

13 members attended today’s meeting. Come and join us next week.

If you encounter any problems, call Gloria.

Following today’s program and an extensive Q&A session, we talked and found out what each of us has been doing to stay out of trouble.

There being no further Rotary business, at 1:00 PM President Vivien concluded our meeting.
